C.S.A. Produce Share F.A.Q.
Below are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding our CSA produce share program. If the topics below do not answer all of your questions, please feel free to contact us directly!
When does your season start and end?
Our harvest distributions typically begin the first week of June and end at the end of October. The exact start, end and duration varies with the weather. We will contact you about the first distribution dates. On average, our season lasts approximately 22 weeks. In addition, we offer a special bonus share available the week of Thanksgiving to those who choose to renew their membership in the fall for the following season.
When can I sign up for the CSA program?
You can sign up any time before our season starts in early June, but we recommend that you do not wait because there are a limited number of shares available.
How big are your shares?
We offer one produce share size. The share can feed a family of four (vegetarian or otherwise) with really no need to supplement as long as the family is willing to eat by the season and the vagaries of farming. Our season starts out with fewer pounds per week of cool season vegetables, greens the first couple of weeks, followed by peas, beans, then onto all the heavier vegetables like squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, melons, beets, carrots, potatoes. We grow over seventy types of vegetables.
Can I split my share with a friend?
Yes, if you feel that the full share will be too large for your family, you may split your share with another individual/family. Our CSA sign-up form has space for including a share partner. Please include an additional $25 basic membership fee with your payment as our share price includes one basic membership for only one family/individual. Your entire full share must be picked up in its entirety. Consequently, if you are splitting a share, you and your share partner must pick up your share at the same time on the same distribution day. For this reason, and to ensure a usable amount of food, we encourage those who choose to split shares to pick-up their shares on alternate weeks. Also, if you sign-up for a working share, you will need to make arrangements with your share partner to ensure that the full 10-hours work requirement is fulfilled between you.
I would like to split a share but don’t have a partner.
Can I still sign-up?
If you can not find a share partner, contact us with your name and preferred pick-up day. If we receive a similar inquiry from another potential member, we will be happy to help match you up and put you in contact with each other. You will be responsible for coordinating between you both to ensure the full share is picked-up in its entirety at distribution and for fulfilling the work hours requirements for a working share.
I would like to participate, but I cannot afford it.
Our farm has assistance available for families in need through our Fair Share Program. Please contact us for an application.
Do you have any fruit?
We grow melons and the snacking fruit in our perennial garden. In the Fall, we partner with Threshold Farm, a biodynamic farm in Columbia County for an apple and cider share for separate purchase by our members. It was very popular and we hope to do it again this season.
When is pick-up and how does it work?
Pick-ups are on Tuesdays or Fridays from 4:00 to 7:00. You must choose one day for the duration of the farm season. Members bring their own bags to distribution. Our distribution is market-style, allowing you to select, weigh, and bag your own produce. A copy of our membership handbook is provided at the first distribution to help familiarize you with how our farm works. In addition, there will be experienced members on-hand at the first distribution to help answer your questions. Distribution is a time to catch up on the news of the farm—our farmers post a mini report on the white board, and at the distribution table there are often flyers for events or sign-up sheets for getting involved in workshops or other activities.
If I can’t come on pick-up day, can I arrange another time?
Unfortunately, this is impossible. We suggest that you arrange for a friend to come and get your food. Our pick-up is market-style, we do not box up shares for you. This allows you to select what size zucchini you want or what type of tomato, but we cannot save a share for you to come another day. Unpicked up shares go to the food pantry or to the farmers market.
Can I bring my children out to the field?
Absolutely! We are a community farm and we welcome children in the garden. There are many ways to get your kids involved with farming including bringing them to work hours, education programs, or even just to u-pick flowers or snack on berries in our perennial gardens. If you have small children, it is important that you supervise them while in the garden, but we have many small children who have come to understand where to walk and how to respect the plants—it’s great opportunity for kids of every age!
What counts as work hours?
Our biggest need is on harvest days which are Tuesday and Friday mornings from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. In addition, we need a member to staff distribution every Tuesday and Friday afternoon from 3:30 to 7:30pm. Beyond that there are Saturday field work hour opportunities, and other opportunities, such as working on committees. Other field work times may also be available.
How do I sign-up for work hours?
We will have sign-up sheets at distribution.
If more than one person comes from my family for work hours, do all our hours count?
Yes, if you are all working! That is, a teenager would count, but a baby and anyone needing to watch the baby would not!
How do I get more involved?
Come to our events! Linger at distribution! Run a workshop! Contact us anytime via email or call Lisa at 831-6070.
