We have the following openings for 2017:

Farm Crew (full season; March or April to November): 2 positions

Summer Apprentice (June to September): 1 position

Farm Crew

 

For the full season farm crew positions, priority will be given to applicants with a minimum of one year’s experience with mixed vegetable production. As a farm rooted in food justice and education, we seek applicants who are serious about a career in agriculture and have a deep interest in community food security. We are looking for passionate and hard-working people to join our team, with the potential for longer-term employment after the 2017 season.

 

Crew members will participate in most areas of farm production and will be encouraged to take on leadership roles in areas that they want to develop, (i.e. crop management, program development, restaurant sales, record keeping, farmers’ market.) Field tasks are mostly done by hand and will include greenhouse propagation, transplanting, seeding, weeding, irrigating, cultivating, harvesting, packing, and general field maintenance. We use tractors for soil preparation and some cultivation, with training from the Farm Director possible. An important and unique aspect of our farm is our relationship with the community. Crew members will meet and interact with our food pantry partners & clients, as well as have opportunities to engage with or teach youth in our educational programs and summer camp. Crew Members will also develop experience with marketing and sales via staffing our stand at the Beacon Farmers Market and working with local chefs & restaurants. 40-45 hour work week, including weekends.

 

Dates: Start date of March or April through mid-November 

Compensation: $11-12/hr depending on experience, produce from the farm, workers’ comp insurance, 3 paid vacation days, 3 paid sick days

 

Summer Apprentice

 

The Summer Apprentice will participate in most aspects of mixed vegetable production, joining a productive and engaged farm team during the busiest and most abundant time of year! This experience is designed to give you hands-on experience, working alongside our full-season crew and farm manager in the greenhouse and fields. An important and unique aspect of our farm is our relationship with the community. The Apprentice will meet and interact with our food pantry partners & clients, as well as have opportunities to engage with or teach youth in our summer camp. The Apprentice will also develop experience with marketing via staffing our stand at the Beacon Farmers Market and working with local chefs & restaurants. The Apprentice will participate in the Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training (CRAFT) farm visits. Farm experience is not a requirement for this position, although applicants should be physically adept, comfortable outdoors in all weather conditions, and committed to learning about sustainable agriculture. 40-45 hour work week, including weekends. 

 

Dates: June through September

Compensation: $10/hour, produce from the farm, workers’ comp insurance, 2 paid vacation days, 2 paid sick days

Beacon Farmers’ Market Manager

 

We are seeking a part-time, year-round manager for all aspects of the Sunday Beacon Farmers’ Market. The mission of the Beacon Farmers’ Market is to feed and engage the Beacon community, support local farms and businesses, and create a more just food system. From April to November, the market is outdoors with 25-30 vendors per week from 10-3, and from November to April the market moves indoors with 16-20 vendors from 10-2. The market manager is responsible for enrolling and supporting a diverse vendor community, orchestrating market operations including running the SNAP/EBT token system and the Greens for Greens double up program, and planning special events like live music and children’s activities. This is a great opportunity for someone who is passionate about the local economy and food security, energetic and physically adept, and enjoys connecting with community members! 

 

Responsibilities

On-site (on market days) 

-setting up and breaking down market manager tent and table, zero waste station (in partnership with Zero to Go,) market day-of signage and music tent (with musician assistance)

-ensuring compliance with State and City regulations

-serving as vendor liaison and resource as needed

-staffing the market table to answer customer questions and distribute SNAP/EBT tokens

-distributing Greens for Greens checks to vendors

-redeeming SNAP/EBT tokens and Greens for Greens checks from vendors

-collecting vendor rent and submitting market income to the CGF admin manager

-on-site troubleshooting 

-posting on social media 

 

Off-site 

-recruiting and enrolling vendors with an eye towards a mix of high-quality products, and an emphasis on local and sustainable agricultural businesses 

-recruiting and scheduling guest vendors, musicians, community organizations and special events

-monitoring vendor compliance with insurance requirements, fee payment, and required certifications

-monitoring the market budget to stay on-budget for 2017

-weekly update email to vendors 

-completing weekly, monthly and seasonal reports including vendor payment tracking and SNAP/EBT and Fresh Connect tracking

-monitoring weather for possible market cancellations 

-writing and sending weekly market newsletter

-seeking business sponsors and partner organizations for events/programs

-developing and implementing creative outreach strategies to ensure each market is well attended by the Beacon community, including signs, posters and social media

-planning and fundraising for the Greens for Greens double up program with CGF staff and Green Teen

 

Qualifications

-excellent communication skills, both in person and on social media

-ability to work in fast-paced environment, in all weather conditions

-excellent organizational skills

-leadership/entrepreneurial drive 

-ability to interact comfortably with public and with groups of all socioeconomic backgrounds

-passion for local agriculture, good food and small businesses

-priority given to candidates with strong ties to the Beacon community

 

Details

The position is part-time, averaging 16 hr/week, $20/hr, year-round, starting as soon as possible to train with the outgoing market manager. Aside from being on-site on Sundays, the market manager has significant freedom to schedule market work as needed during the week, and to work from home if desired. Market work intensifies during the application period from late January to March, and again from September to November, and slows down once each season (indoor/outdoor) finds its rhythm.
