Farmers’ Market Manager

Beacon, NY


CGF is seeking a part-time, year-round manager for all aspects of the Sunday Beacon Farmers’ Market. This position will also have the opportunity to be a part of our market expansion initiatives in Newburgh.

 

The mission of the Common Ground Farmers’ Markets is to feed and engage the local community, support local farms and businesses, and create a more just food system.

From May through November, the Beacon Farmers’ market is outdoors with 25-30 vendors per week from 10am-3pm, and from December through April the market moves indoors with 16-20 vendors from 10am-2pm. The market manager is responsible for enrolling and supporting a diverse vendor community, orchestrating market operations including running the SNAP/EBT token system and the ‘Greens4Greens’ double up program, and planning special events like educational programming and children’s activities. This is a great opportunity for someone who is passionate about the local economy and food security, energetic and physically adept, and enjoys connecting with community members!


Responsibilities

On-site - Beacon (market days)

-approximately 8am to 4pm outdoor season / 8am to 3:30pm indoor season

-setting up and breaking down market manager tent and table and market day-of signage

-measuring, marking and assigning vendor spaces

-ensuring vendor load-in & load-out runs smoothly

-ensuring compliance with State and City regulations

-serving as vendor liaison and resource as needed

-staffing the market table to answer customer questions and distribute SNAP/EBT tokens

-distributing ‘Greens4Greens’ checks to vendors

-redeeming SNAP/EBT tokens and ‘Greens4Greens’ checks from vendors

-collecting vendor rent and submitting market income to the CGF admin manager

-on-site troubleshooting

-posting on social media

-staying on-site until all vendors have packed up and cleared street

-ensuring all vendors have cleared street by 4pm


Off-site

-recruiting and enrolling vendors with an eye towards a mix of high-quality products, and an emphasis on local and sustainable agricultural businesses

-recruiting and scheduling guest vendors, community organizations and special events

-monitoring vendor compliance with insurance requirements, fee payment, and required certifications

-renewing license agreements with the City of Beacon before the start of each season

-monitoring the market budget to stay on-budget for 2018

-weekly update email to vendors

-completing weekly, monthly and seasonal reports including vendor payment tracking and SNAP/EBT and Fresh Connect tracking

-monitoring weather for possible market cancellations

-writing and sending weekly market newsletter

-seeking business sponsors and partner organizations for events/programs

-developing and implementing creative outreach strategies to ensure each market is well attended by the Beacon community, including signs, posters and social media

-planning and fundraising for the ‘Greens4Greens’ double up program with the Market Committee, CGF Staff and Green Teens

-attend biweekly staff meetings

-hosting regular Market Committee meetings throughout the year to discuss market growth, vision, vendor enrollment and fundraising opportunities

-work with CGF staff on Newburgh market initiatives

Details

The position is part-time, averaging 16-20 hr/week, compensation based on experience, year-round, starting as soon as possible to train with the outgoing market manager. Aside from being on-site on Sundays, the market manager has freedom to schedule office hours/meetings as needed during the week.  Market work intensifies during the application period from late January to March, and again from September to November, and slows down once each season (indoor/outdoor) finds its rhythm.

Downing Park Farmers’ Market Manager

Common Ground Farm is seeking a part-time, seasonal Market Manager for the Downing Park Farmers’
Market. The mission of the Downing Park Farmers’ Market is to support the residents and City of
Newburgh by providing a high-quality market and programming accessible to everyone, regardless of
age, race, or income. The project will be undertaken as a program of Common Ground Farm, with the
help and cooperation of the City of Newburgh, the Downing Park Planning Committee, Newburgh Urban
Farm & Food Initiative and the Downing Park Urban Farm.
 
From August through October, the market is outdoors at Downing Park with an estimated 5-10 vendors
per week from 10am-2pm. With guidance from Common Ground’s Senior Market Manager, the Downing
Park Manager will be responsible for market day set-up, break-down, SNAP / EBT processing, collecting
market rent from vendors, and general day-of on-site management and market support. The Manager will
also be selling Common Ground Farm produce during the market with potential volunteer assistance.
They will have hours outside of the market day for administrative tasks, programming coordination and
networking within the Newburgh community.
 
The position requires excellent communication skills, the ability to think on one's feet, comfort in
assuming a leadership role, and a willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Candidates must
also have reliable transportation, be able to lift and carry 50 lbs, and have access to a computer for social
networking, emailing and reports.

Time:
● This is a seasonal, part time position running from August through October.
● Saturdays (market day) 6 hours- Approximately 8:30am to 3:30pm.
● Additional 8 hours flex time during the week for administrative and networking responsibilities.
● Total of 14 hours per week - minimum of 12 weeks + 8 hours start up training
 
Compensation:
● $15 per hour
● As a Common Ground Staff member, the Downing Park Manager will also receive a Summer
U-Pick CSA share (pick-ups on Wednesday afternoons or Saturday mornings)
