From the Executive Director:
Winding Down
On Saturday at my house we geared up for the storm and we did disaster preparedness for our chickens. We sealed up the windows, put ample hay down and put an ugly tarp over the run for the day for the girls. On Sunday, we stood, mouths agape, as our ill considered tarp's snow load utterly collapsed our chicken run, something we had not even considered. We do gardening and some small egg production at home, but this little vignette and the days of work ahead really made me appreciate, again, the work our farmers do and the daily set backs that demand full production mode, working until the problem is solved because members, or chickens, depend on it.
We have had some serious setbacks at the farm this season, from extreme weather, fertility issues to furry marauders (by the way, if anyone in this membership is ever caught dumping a woodchuck at the farm, which seems to be the model for the local community--expect sanctions!). That said, I was frankly astonished at how our farmers really pulled a rabbit out of a hat and ended our season with some truly beautiful and bountiful greens and other late season offerings. When Irene hit, I was uncertain where we would end up by season's end, but Tim, Sam and Sarah really worked hard to try to replace our losses with a special high tunnel sowing, additional sowings in the fields, and soil replacement as well--without a break to moan or groan. I also want to thank every member who has supported our fundraising efforts this year and our soil-raising efforts. The soil raising party was a highlight of our season, despite the circumstances, and a testament to this community.
While our CSA has ended for the season, stay tuned for a small winter greens CSA to be announced after the new year and also don't forget to sign up for 2012! In lieu of a Thanksgiving share, we are offering discounts on full payment and farmer's market certificates to anyone who puts down a deposit of $100 or more. We will also be offering educational programming at the farm throughout the winter as a way to connect to our farm year-round.
I also want to encourage everyone to come out to our Third Annual Harvest Auction on November 5th. This is a great evening to wind down our season, with fantastic food, drink and music and amazing auction items. This is a great way to do some early holiday shopping and support the farm at the same time! I have my eye on the Adirondack cabin and the sconces by Jessica Wickham!
Lastly, I just want to personally say how excited we are to have West Wildfong Heuer join our community. Congratulations Tim and Sam and welcome West!
See you at the auction!
